Cowgirl and Horse with Loose Background

How to Let Your Color Mix on the Paper For Horses

   Watch Promo

Intermediate level lesson for painting a cowgirl with a loose background.

Learn to let the paint mix on the paper when you paint the horse with different mixes of brown. (This lesson will show you two amazing pigments that make brilliant brown to black colors easily.) And if you're bold, drop in a wet on wet background with just a few quick strokes.

Last, you can spatter opaque white at the bottom for the blowing snow bits, but let your painting set for a day before you do this. If there are any tweaks you need to make, be sure to do them before adding the snow.

You can refer to the reference photo and outline to paint this as shown, or use your own colors or ideas to create a unique work of art.

This lesson can usually be finished in one session of two to three hours.

Hi, I'm Deb Watson - a self taught artist and long time watercolor teacher

My story is simple.

I loved drawing from childhood, but was discouraged from art as a waste of time. So, I became a nurse, worked at a lot of hospitals and raised a family. But I kept painting.

Over time, I became better at the realism I loved, and just kept working toward improving through painting and self-study. I've always enjoyed painting scenes from my life and small town community (which I call my Small Town America series).

My paintings are not usually famous or majestic subjects, often they're just everyday stuff I see around. But I see so much beauty there, and show it to the rest of the world by painting it.

Now, my watercolors have been in exhibits and won awards across the nation. Yet, it's when my art connects me to other people that it's really done what I wanted, and teaching certainly does that!

Happy Painting.
